What is Square Dancing, where does it come from?
Square dancing as we know it today does come from America, one of their more popular exports. It has been danced in the United Kingdom since the early 50’s.
It was put together in America but it did not start there. It started in the ‘Old World’. When the settlers left Europe and other parts to settle in the ‘New World’ they took with them their own national folk dances, the dances from their courts, and any other dances they enjoyed. This was OK if you stayed in your own town but if you went to another town the dances they did were often different because the people had come from somewhere else.
It was Henry Ford, of the Ford Motor Car, had a survey of all the different dances done and from that square dancing as we know it was born. It is unique in that wherever it is danced the calls are always in English. It is truly a universal dance form.
For the square dancers out there I am happy to call both Mainstream and Plus programmes including APD/DBD.
I am happy to call squares to complete beginners with no dance experience at all.
